Create GIFs in Lightroom

Create GIFs from your images directly in Lightroom. Live animated preview, stabilization, MP4 export for social media.

Before — raw burst
After — stabilized with GIFstack
Same handheld burst. “Fixed background” mode, the default setting.
The problem

Before GIFstack, animating a series of images meant leaving Lightroom and breaking your workflow.

Export the images → Open Photoshop / an online tool → Align them by hand → Set the frame rate → Export again
With GIFstack: everything inside Lightroom, in a single window, with a live preview.
What sets it apart

Stabilization

A handheld burst shakes. GIFstack realigns the frames to reduce that shake. Since no single method works for every shot, GIFstack offers 5 stabilization methods to match the motion in your images.

Fixed background Default
The background freezes, the subject keeps moving.
Fixed background, no tilt
Removes the “breathing” of the frame.
Smoothed motion
Keeps your intended pan, removes only the shake.
Fixed subject
The subject freezes, the background moves around it.
Whole frame
No area given priority.

Live animated preview

The animation plays inside the window with stabilization, cropping and sharpening already applied. Adjust and see the result before exporting.

Batch processing

Select a whole memory card: GIFstack processes every burst in one pass, with no image-by-image work.

Automatic sequence splitting

A selection of 200 photos holding five bursts shot at different moments becomes five separate animations. Each sequence keeps its own settings and can be left out of the export.

Export resolution and file size

Set a resolution in pixels or a maximum size in megabytes: GIFstack scales down as needed to stay within your limit.

How it works

Three steps, without leaving Lightroom.

All features

Everything the window lets you adjust.

GIF or MP4 output
GIF or MP4. MP4 is there mainly for social media.
Resolutions
960 / 1280 / 1600 / 2000 px, or custom.
Output sharpening
Scaling a 6000 px photo down to 1200 softens detail. This option brings it back, like “Output Sharpening: Screen” in a Lightroom export.
Cropping
With a “centred on the subject” option (face detection).
Playback
Ping-pong, reverse, adjustable frame rate, loop count.
Filename templates
Saves time renaming your GIFs.
Selection thumbnails
Every frame in the sequence shows as a thumbnail; untick the ones to leave out of the animation.
Sequence separation
Past an adjustable gap (1.5 seconds by default), GIFstack treats the frames as a new burst and creates a separate animation.
Review
“Oh wow. What a time saver! I've tried plenty of ways to make GIFs quickly, and this one is by far the best, for several reasons: it's built into Lightroom, so you can keep working on your catalogue at the same time, with no need to export the images first. That saves space on my drives too! You can build each GIF with different settings without ever leaving the window. And the live preview means you know you are getting the GIF you want. Special mention for being able to export to MP4 as well! Really, it saves me precious time.”

No countdown and nothing locked: every feature works. Only two limits — resolution is capped at 480 px, and a “trial version” badge is composited onto the animation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is different in the trial compared to the full version? +

Nothing feature-wise: stabilization, the animated preview and sequence splitting all work normally. Only the resolution — capped at 480 px — and a “trial version” badge on the animation set the trial apart from the activated version.

Can GIFstack handle a selection containing several different bursts? +

Yes. GIFstack detects the time gaps between shots and automatically splits the selection into separate sequences, each one adjustable and exportable on its own.

What setup does GIFstack run on? +

Adobe Lightroom Classic, on macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and on Windows.

Does GIFstack work with Lightroom (cloud) or Photoshop? +

No, GIFstack is a plugin for Lightroom Classic only.

Creating GIFs in Lightroom

GIFstack is a plugin that lets you create GIFs from your photos directly in Lightroom, without going through Photoshop or another tool. Select a series of images, adjust your animation and preview the result before exporting it.

A GIF plugin built into Lightroom

Building an animation from a series of photos usually takes several steps: export the images, align them, create the animation in another application, then return to your usual workflow. GIFstack brings those steps together inside Lightroom so you can create your GIFs without leaving your working environment.

GIFstack is currently compatible with Lightroom Classic on macOS and Windows. The plugin integrates directly into Lightroom and processes the selected images on your own computer.

Creating a GIF from your photos

From a series of images, GIFstack creates an animation in a few clicks. You can watch the GIF live, adjust the settings of your sequence and choose the resolution or the maximum file size of your export.

Batch processing also lets you select several series of images and create several animations without starting over for each sequence. GIFstack can automatically detect and separate different bursts within a single selection.

Stabilizing and preparing your sequences

A handheld series of photos can produce a shaky animation. GIFstack offers several stabilization methods to realign the frames and reduce unwanted movement between them.

Stabilization, cropping and the settings you apply are all visible in the animated preview before exporting. That way you can check the result of your GIF directly in Lightroom.

Exporting to GIF or MP4

Once your animation is ready, GIFstack exports it as a GIF or an MP4. The resolution and maximum size settings make it easy to fit the file to its final use, in particular the web, client galleries and social media.

GIFstack was designed for photographers who want to add animations to their deliverables without piling up applications or interrupting their Lightroom workflow. Install GIFstack in Lightroom.
